THE FREIGHT ON THE POWDER IS 6 CENTS A POUND

Some years ago and not very long,

You could get freight to Burgeo for just a mere song.

But it's not so to-day, as I hear going round

That the freight on the powder is 6 cents a pound.

When you're loading your shells, just think of the cost

Every day you go shooting how much time is lost,

And then just consider every bird you knock down

That the freight on the powder is 6 cents a pound.

When you go in the country to look for a deer,

For partridge, rabbits and sometime a hare,

Be sure when you fire to knock the game down

For the freight on the powder is 6 cents a pound.

Years, long ago I heard people say

That freights were much lower than they are to-day.

Old Guy Fawkes would never have tried to blow up the town

If the freight on the powder was 6 cents a pound.

We must wait a little longer and see what they'll do,

The hound, the duck and tickleace too.

You know very well every bird would fall down,

If they knew freight on the powder was 6 cents a pound.

Just add to that sales tax and surtaxes too,

That will tell you what us poor creatures must do,

We must put down our guns and go loafing around,

While the freight on the powder is 6 cents a pound.

We will all have to get a pole or a bat

And try to kill turrs and icebirds with that.

We can keep ourselves warm in a punt rowing round,

While the freight on the powder is 6 cents a pound.
